Burra Welcome Committee

Burra Welcome Committee

Under the auspices of the CRISP pilot program, five Korumburra women formed a group to sponsor one refugee family to come to our community. This is a new federal government initiative to encourage communities to aid in the resettlement of people who have had to flee their homes overseas.

In March 2023, we welcomed Mohamad, Basha and their four children to Korumburra.

Since then, the family has relocated to Melbourne to be closer to the Syrian community, but the Burra Welcome Committee is currently considering new ways forward and keen to hear from like-minded community members who may be interested in sponsoring another refugee family.

As sponsors it is our job to find the refugee family we are allocated with accommodation, possible work opportunities, organise bank accounts and Medicare, schools, fundraising etc.

If you would like more information about the Burra Welcome Committee and to chat about how you may be able to help, please contact Laura Muranty on lauramuranty@gmail.com
