The Energy Innovation Co-operative was formed in 2009 as a community response to climate change and peak oil. The Co-op was formally registered as a trading Co-operative in August 2009, and a board of nine.

By July 2011 the EICo-op was managing projects with $310,000 in grants and almost 200 members/shareholders.
