Staying Strong by being prepared
In Korumburra there are many places we may feel like we belong, whether it’s with a church, at the footy, on the rail trail, in our garden, at a landcare planting, on the tennis court, working on our classic cars, in a knitting circle, our art studios and galleries or gathering together at Magillas, The Coterie, Kelly’s, the Middle or the Austral. Hopefully, there’s a place for all of us.
What Korumburra Staying Strong (KSS) has been about is encouraging us to come together and build on this strong community of places, to make new connections and increase our town’s overall resilience. As a stronger, more resilient community we all benefit in good times and in times of need and challenge as we are better able to help each other out.
KSS have hosted 3 community events since 2022 that invited people from the area to share ideas, and for community groups to promote themselves to new and established community members. We’re proud of these events and other work we have done to encourage connections and thereby increase resilience in Korumburra. Our events are well known for their enthusiastic turnout not to mention the free donuts and BBQ!
On Saturday March 1st at 11-1pm in the grounds of the Community Hub & in Boston Place (below the Korumburra Community Hub) we are hosting our 4th community event. On the day we are launching a most important resilience resource for Korumburra - a community focussed resilience plan. This event will help prepare us all for the next storm or disaster that we face. The event will be packed with resources and ideas for what we can all do.
We will share our own community resilience plan that shows how we can all contribute before, during and after storm and emergency events
You can help us build on these plans with your rich ideas and feedback - tell us what we have missed!
You can get involved. Sign up for a register of community emergency volunteers. Share details of any resources you can offer the community in the event of an emergency.
Sign up to join our annual emergency and resiliency plans review group, who will keep these plans alive and continuously improving into the future.
And of course there will be a free BBQ and donuts - otherwise it would not be a KSS event!
Many emergency services will be present to share what they can and can’t do to help in an emergency and how we can help them best do their jobs:
CFA
Red Cross
SES
Vic Police
South Gippsland Shire Council
Salvation Army
AusNet Services
Ambulance
In storms and other events it is so important we reach everybody, as those left out are often the most vulnerable. So we invite all our Korumburra community to come along and be a part of this event. Tell your neighbours, your fellow sports club members, your fellow church goers or your mates from the Pub. All are welcome!
Volunteers and community groups are the backbone of any community. The March 1st event is also an opportunity to thank volunteers of any form for their contribution to the community. A connected community in the good times becomes a resilient community in the challenging times.
‘Know your Neighbour’ leaflets were delivered to mailboxes recently and are a great way to introduce yourself to a neighbour in case of an emergency. We encourage our community to use these leaflets or pick up one on March 1st.
Together we can create a safer, more resilient community.
We look forward to seeing you all on Saturday 1st March, 11am - 1pm
